Metolius River Update October 25th, 2024

The Metolius is in full swing this fall, offering exciting fishing for those who know where to look. The Green Drake hatch has mostly tapered off, though you might still see a few stragglers in the late afternoon—keep both #10 and #14 patterns on hand just in case. PMDs, Mahogany Duns, BWOs, and October Caddis are still showing up across the upper sections, from the headwaters to Gorge Campground, with consistent activity. For anglers who prefer nymphing, caddis pupae, Perdigons, Egan’s Frenchies, and golden stonefly nymphs are delivering. As kokanee begin their migration, rainbows are actively feeding on drifting eggs, making egg patterns a valuable choice.

For Bull Trout, larger streamers like Dolly Llamas are effective, especially if you’re out early. Downstream from Allingham Bridge, which remains open year-round, these same hatches continue into the canyon, around Bridge 99, and in the hatchery area, providing good fishing opportunities as we move toward winter.
