Although not on the stocking schedule the hatchery did dump a load of fresh fish into the river sometime last week. From what I have heard the fish are either trophies or brood-stock which means they are BIG. With these new fish swimming around expect some pretty great fishing for the next couple of weeks. Those big fish are aggressive and will chase down streamers with almost no question, I like white, but black, brown and olive will work as well. Cast your fly upstream of the fish and let it sink to the right depth before starting your retrieve, vary your retrieve rate until you find what the fish like. The PMDs are still hatching but will soon be replaced entirely by the smaller baetis and bluewings we are used to seeing in the fall and throughout the winter. When you find a few fish actively feeding take your time to get into optimal casting position and have the right setup for the specific situation, changing out a fly or re-tying a knot can be all the difference. The usual nymphing techniques have been producing fish consistently with euro nymphing quickly becoming more and more popular the river is a perfect playground for anybody just getting into the nymphing game bobber or not.
