The Lower Deschutes has been fishing well. Unfortunately, the river is closed to all angling below Moody Rapids. Above Moody Rapids up to Sherars Falls is closed to steelhead angling, even if it’s catch and release. Remember to check the regulations on myodfw.com before you head out. It’s an inconvenience but these regulations are necessary for protecting the lower numbers of fish in the system. The good news is that water temperatures are cooling down. Surface action is decent in afternoons. Pale morning duns and caddis are the main hatches. Expect better pale morning dun action as temperatures cool down. Grasshoppers can work well this time of year as well. If you’re nymphing above the bottom, PMD nymphs and caddis pupa will work well. Stoneflies, general mayfly nymphs and jigged euro flies work great near the bottom. Fall is on its way which will bring some relief to the fish. Let’s hope that the steelhead run is delayed and more show up in the next few weeks.
