We saw another spike in the flows on the Crooked to accommodate the bump from rain above the dam. Sudden and substantial changes in flows certainly aren’t great for the fishing, and it usually takes a couple of days of consistent flows before fish really settle into new holding water and begin to feed consistently. While it was a bit of a bummer to see the flows jump up right as we were starting to settle into prime, early summer flows and great fishing I think we can all agree that any water we can get as summer approaches is good for the rivers, fish, and those who spend time on the water. It looks like the rain is in the rearview mirror, and with warm sunny days in the forecast I’d expect to see things drop back to prime levels in the near future. Crooked river diehards can still get out there and fish, but there will be limited fishable water. For the rest of us, look for flows to drop below 400 and expect things to really heat up once we’re below 300. Not much has changed in regards to flies or tactics. It’s getting a little late for the Mother’s Day Caddis but there will be a great variety of Mayflies and other Caddis coming with the warm weather!
