There is a lot of Salmonfly activity from Warm Springs Down on the Lower Deschutes. As expected, we’ve experienced some great days and a few tough days trying to endice big redsides to the surface. With the cooler weather we saw the progress of the hatch slow for a little while, which has meant the big bugs have been out on the banks for a while now. The good news is that on any given day there is opportunity to find fish sporadically on a big Stonefly dry. With the warm weather in the forecast there should be a large number of insects actively moving around the bank and flying around, dry fly opportunities should only get better in the next few days. There are good numbers of Golden Stones in the mix as well, typically the big Stonefly patterns we like to throw are suitable representations of both species of the big bugs. Look for the most surface activity to occur during the low light hours of the evening and on afternoons that provide a little cloud cover. Otherwise, the shaded areas under overhanging trees and along grassy banks are sure to hold nice fish as long as the bugs are around!
