The fishing on the Metolius has been steady, and nymphing remains the most productive way to find fish. Large stonefly patterns will catch fish, but we have seen more success on smaller mayfly patterns in the past few days. Olive micro mayflies and olive soft hackles in sizes 18-20 fished behind a jimmy leg or golden stone pattern in size 6-10 have been finding fish. Mighty mays and two-bit hookers in red or black and sizes 16-20 should also produce. We’ve continued to see good numbers of BWOs so keep an eye on the back eddies for a chance to fish dries.
We’ve received several reports of large bull trout being caught on streamers in the past week. Olive, white, and natural are the most productive colors, fish as large a fly as you can throw and make sure to get them deep!
