The fishing at East Lake has been great! The weather is nice, the smoke is there, and so are the crowds. At least over the holiday weekend, they were. There have been several nice callibaetis hatches come off through the day. The morning hatch coming off as early as 8am and last for about an hour or so. The afternoon hatch was going off at about 3 and lasting til 4 or so, with a short evening hatch around 7. During the morning, we were seeing black caddis coming off in numbers. This was around first light!
If you are fishing the callibaetis hatch, focus your efforts on spinners and cripples. Our go to fly has been a hackle stacker (sz 16). Fishing with 5x tippet is the way to go. Make sure you have a decent number of callibaetis dries because the action can last! When the calli bite turns off, focus on fishing a dry dropper under a black chubby (sz 10). A nice 18-20 midge or mayfly dropper on 5x flouro will get you into some fish!
If you are set on stripping, olive wooly bugger/leeches on an intermediate sink line have proven to get into some fish this week.
