Its continued to be a great start to the season on the Upper Deschutes, with various stretches of water producing good numbers of fish. One of the things we love about the Upper Deschutes is the wide array of species and sizes of fish present. Brookies, Rainbows, Browns, and Whitefish are present through most of the system, and different stretches of water can require very different approaches. The swift currents between Little Lava and Crane Prairie can provide excellent opportunity to throw attractor patterns and terrestrials to hungry Rainbows and Brookies eager to come to the surface, while some of the deeper pools in the same stretch can require a nymph or streamer setup to get down to some nice sized fish. Below Crane, larger water provides great opportunity to nymph for beautiful fish, with Browns being thrown into the mix of species potentially on the end of the line. The entire area is fishing well, and while the recent National Fly Fishing Championship event put a fair amount of pressure on the fish, there is plenty of opportunity to get into the beautiful Cascades and fish for hungry trout!
