A Casual Way to Go Fishing - Anytime of the Year!

One of the coolest aspects of being an angler in Bend is that we have great rivers to fish all year long and all within an hour of town. The main walk and wade rivers are the Crooked River, Fall River, and the Upper Deschutes River. Depending on the season and what our clients want out of the day, we’ll suggest the best of the three. You really can’t go wrong! And you don’t have to fish all day...we offer both half-day and full-day Walk and Wade Trips. The half-day trip is 4 hours on the water, so you’ll only be gone from town for 5 to 6 hours. Full-day trips offer 8 hours of fishing on the water including a delicious streamside lunch.

As with any of our guided fly fishing adventures, Walk and Wade trips include all of the necessary equipment. So if you’re traveling and don’t want to lug your gear, we've got you covered. All of our client equipment is well-suited for these trips; you just have to show up. If you have the flies you need, great. If not, we have the right bugs at the shop. Our Central Oregon guided fly fishing trips epitomize ease and fun, whether it’s just you, a family, a group of friends, or a corporate outing.

Your Day, Your Choice

The rivers that Fly & Field Outfitters offers walk and wade fly fishing trips on are all unique, both in regards to the fishing and the scenery. Settings include cool Ponderosa forests, lupine strewn alpine meadows, and dramatic desert canyons. While the Upper Deschutes River has a 6-month fishing season, both the Crooked River and Fall River fish wonderfully all year, including sensational dry fly action on the shortest days of winter! No matter what time of the year you’d like to take a guided Walk and Wade Trip, every day on the water with us is a fun, educational experience filled with scenery that will take your breath away.

Walk and Wade Trips typically begin at our shop on the west side of Bend, Oregon where we kit you out for the day ahead. Meet times vary throughout the season but rarely is extreme “dawn patrol” necessary. Once you have everything you need for the day, you will follow your guide to the river where he or she will supply a cooler with water, Gatorade, soda, and ice. If you’d like to bring some beer, we’ll have the cold cooler waiting for you!

FAQs for Walk and Wade Trips

What is included on a Walk and Wade Trip?
As with all our guided adventures, we will outfit you with a rod, reel, waders, and boots which are all included in the price. On full-day trips, we serve a full lunch either aboard your guide’s boat or ashore. Lunch will be your choice of grilled chicken, brats, burger, or deli-style sandwich and all will be served with salad and a dessert. If you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies, we will accommodate you and your party. Fly & Field will supply cold soda, Gatorade, and water, and if you are interested in having some beers or other alcoholic beverages, bring them along and we are happy to pack them in the cooler.
What should I bring with me for a Walk and Wade trip?
We recommend some sunscreen, lip balm, and anything you might need to snack on before or after lunch. Bring a camera or your phone for getting the “grip-n-grin” shot! Also, we are not allowed to supply any alcoholic beverages to our clients. Having said that, you are more than welcome to bring a six-pack or whatever your preference is. We’ve been informed, by perfectly reliable sources, that a cold beer goes nicely with a day of fishing.
What isn't included in the price of a guided trip?
You will be responsible for purchasing a few flies for the day. If you do not already have an Oregon Fishing License we can sell you one here at the shop either the day of the trip or beforehand. Also, a generous gratuity for the guide is always welcome for their local knowledge and expertise!
What species of fish are we hoping to catch?
Well, that depends on which river we take you to! And that will depend on what your aspirations are for your day out with us. Typically, we will listen to what you’d like to get out of the day and then make a recommendation as to which river to hit. The other variable will be weather and fishing conditions. The Crooked River has native Redband rainbow trout and Mountain Whitefish. The Fall River is primarily a rainbow river with a few brookies and browns thrown in. The Upper Deschutes is a wonderful brook trout fishery, but there are some rainbows and whitefish in there too.
What should I wear for a Walk and Wade Trip?
Dressing properly is an important aspect of an enjoyable day on the water. In the spring and fall that can mean anything from a puffy jacket and beanie to UV protectant shirt and a sun hat. During the summer, the vast majority of the time we are in lightweight clothes and a large-brimmed hat. For under your waders a light base layer and some warm socks will be fine. We recommend a pair of polarized sunglasses for better water visibility and if the weather looks like it might go sideways, we suggest a rain jacket.
How many people can go on a Walk and Wade trip?
The maximum is 4 guests per 1 guide. We can take more folks out but there will never be more than a 4:1 ratio. We can take multiple guides out for larger parties. For group outings, we also offer all-inclusive pricing. Contact the shop at 1-866-800-2812 for how that works.
