Throughout the history and lore of angling there is hardly a more iconic or legendary destination than the Lower Deschutes River in Oregon to fly fish for summer run steelhead. Of this place and quarry, perhaps more books have been written, films made, stories told and re-told than any other. The reason for this is quite simple: going on a Deschutes River Guided Trip for steelhead is about as perfect as one can imagine.
Whether it’s done in the late summer near the confluence with the Columbia, or in the shortest, coldest days of the year up in the “Day Stretch” you will find that the steel head fishing in Oregon is top notch. Whether you prefer swinging flies with Spey rods or fishing large nymph rigs under an indicator, no matter what kind of water you enjoy plying, there is something here for you. No matter where you’ve been, this is place you must experience.
Here at Fly and Field Outfitters, we’ve been guiding Oregon fly-fishing trips for steelhead on the Lower Deschutes River for many, many years. Our Oregon fishing guides have decades of experience and river knowledge to share. We know every nook and cranny. Whether you want to disappear for three or four days on a guided camp trip or only have a day to drift the “Day Stretch” we know where the great fish like to hang out.
The Deschutes River in Oregon and hard-fighting steelhead go hand in hand. From July through December, steelhead can be found from the Columbia to Warm Springs near the dam at Lake Simtustus. Fly and Field Outfitters’ seasoned guides have spent every free moment, and then some, pursuing steelhead. We know when, where, and how to hunt for these fish to ensure our clients have the highest chances of getting beautiful, wild summer run steelhead to the net.
Our multi day camp trips are from Macs Canyon to the Heritage Landing, which is the confluence of the Deschtues River and the mighty Columbia River. This trip is filled with run after run of some of the most highly productive steelhead waters on the west coast. You will spend your days hunting for wild steelhead and most days begin before the sun comes over the high desert cliffs and ends long after the sun has set in the west. You will experience gourmet meals and first class bankside camping with spacious tents and plenty of leg room to stretch out after a long day of pursuing wild native Oregon steelhead.
By the middle of September we start running the upper stretches of the Lower Deschtues River, with our single day Deschutes River Trip floats from Warm Springs to Trout Creek and our multi day drift boat trips from Trout Creek to Harpham Flats, near the town of Maupin. This is perhaps the most remote and epic 30 miles of the Lower Deschutes and included the famed and feared Whitehorse Rapids.
We offer a variety of guided fly fishing trip packages to ensure that each fisherman can spend quality time on the water and fish the best water available to increase their odds of success. You can also check out our other options: Private Lake Fly Fishing Trips, Oregon Pheasant Hunting Trips, Crooked River Guided Trips, or our Walk and Wake Trips. We look forward to seeing you on the water! On each trip you will experience first class, knowledgeable guides, and multiple opportunities to land the fish of your dreams. Fly and Field Outfitters is here to ensure that your experience chasing wild native steelhead will not soon be forgotten.
